Celebrating 15 years of service (1994), the Piz’za-za Restaurant and Wine Bar, located in the heart of Old Hull in Gatineau, enjoys a faithful and ever growing clientele. Specializing in fine pizzas, the restaurant rapidly acquired an enviable reputation by giving considerable recognition to the Italian pie it produces with only in-house and terroir ingredients.
The restaurant is a prime location for both tourists and local people seeking a good time and a delicious meal in an environment that is connected and friendly and where wine is celebrated through the monthly choices of guest sommeliers.
There is a daily table d’hôte (soup or salad, and pizza of the day) for less than $12, a pleasant summer terrace with entertainment: wine tasting soirées where avid enologists recall their visits to vineyards with stories and projections.
The Piz’za-za concept invites its guests, tourists and workers, to a low-cost celebration, offering a selection of fine wines chosen by experienced enologists, available both by the glass and by the bottle.
The Piz’za-za is a winning formula given Quebecers' increasing interest in wine and the lack of wine bars in the Outaouais Region.
What better accompaniment for wine tasting than a range of some twenty pizzas made with fillings developed to meet a variety of tastes (salty, spicy, sweet, etc.)? The restaurant received the 1994 Renovation Prize awarded by the Hull Centre Town Revitalization Corporation.
In 2008, Ms. Anne Debrisay, the Ottawa Citizen's food critic, included the Piz'za-za among her 10 favourite restaurants in the greater National Capital Region because of its pizzas and wine list. The Collège des ambassadeurs du vin au Québec (appointed by Quebec's Société des alcools, the Quebec liquor board) awarded the restaurant the 2008 Carte d’or because of its excellent wine list in the 100 to 250 wines category.
In its last two issues of the restaurant guide Voir, Piz'za-za was among the 25 cuisine and wine-by-the-glass favourites in Quebec. The menu pays tribute to top-quality food and ingredients from the terroir such as smoked poultry from Saveurs des Monts, smoked trout from the Chelsea curing plant, and Petit Vinoy cheese from Chénéville. Furthermore, the menu has a great variety of original house salads and desserts, thus offering clients a healthy and complete meal.
For lovers of fine wines, the Amicale des Sommeliers has been providing wine classes for many years, and the wine tasting evenings seem to be delighting people for the past 15 years.
Conducted by either Véronique Rivest or Richard Charbonneau, such epicurean evenings dedicated to various grape varieties and regions of the world have brought groups together. They also lead special events held at the request of many professional associations or groups of individuals who are offered special wine-tasting sessions, such as the Association of Quebec Economists in the Outaouais, etc.
Furthermore, (monthly) guest wine-by-the-glass selections are suggested by guest sommeliers from the region who select the best price-quality ratio products the SAQ is offering.
The guest sommeliers' mandate includes providing waiters with training on new products. This helps us ensure that every teammate has continuous wine-related training. Always with our clients' interest in mind, Piz’za-za constantly tries to attract epicureans by offering good wines at a resale price that is below average.
Very popular because of a regular and constantly renewed clientele, the restaurant greets a large number of clients and the impact on the economy and on the tourist industry is felt by all surrounding establishments (bars and restaurants).
The Piz’za-za has reached its objectives of being the "oomph" in the client's experience. That little extra element that turns every visit to Piz’za-za into a pleasant get-together. Having a meal at the Piz’za-za awakens the senses, and warms and nourishes both body and spirit. You always feel totally at ease, whatever the hour, and no matter if it's for a quick snack or a long relaxed meal…
The customized service enlivens the enjoyment, and the larger rooms on the second floor can accommodate community and business groups for evenings of entertainment or celebrations. The restaurant's reputation has spread beyond the confines of the city. Indeed, a meal at Piz'za-za is a must for those who are visiting the National Capital Region because of the constancy in the high quality of its products and its warm ambiance.
